Deschamps defends spendthrift Giroud

France coach Didier Deschamps has defended striker Olivier Giroud, but admits Arsenal striker should have scored against Serbia on Monday.

As hosts of Euro 2016, France have no need to qualify, but the Serbs acquired in a friendly at the Stade de Bordeaux-Atlantique, where Blaise Matuidi scored two goals for Les Bleus against Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic scored for Serbia.
Giroud started as a lone striker, but could not find the net before being replaced by Karim Benzema of Real Madrid, who was apparently being chased by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger Giroud compete at club level.
"He rose unlucky sometimes because the goalkeeper made a great save and got three clear chances," Deschamps said. "It was not the goal, a header from the frame of the goal.
"Obviously it would have been more efficient if the result would have been much higher. In his paper he made a great effort. I always leave a lot of freedom to three attacking players so we also had to counter.
"Obviously he knows about his performance. He is the first to be saddened by their lack of effectiveness. But it happens sometimes. If not Olivier, could be Karim Benzema. The performance of all equipment is of a high standard. "
Giroud has a goal in four games in the Premier League this season, having scored a respectable 14 in 27 games last season, before the visit of Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
